It’s Sunny In Denbigh’s 5th birthday y’all!

Dear Sunflowers!

It’s a celebration and God is the greatest! Today January 19th, 2024 we celebrate five years in business. It’s Sunny In Denbigh’s 5th birthday y’all! 

Statistics show that 45% of businesses fail within the first 5 years. Trust me when I tell you it has been work growing and scaling this business over the past few years. For the first 2 years, I continued working full time at my 9-5 and also worked full time for Sunny. It was crazy! If you’re a day 1 Sunflower you remember the 6 week shipping schedule, and seeing me go Live on IG on my lunch break, or on my way to work in the mornings. 

Most nights I would get 3-4 hours of sleep, as I struggled to fill orders, make products and do everything in the business. I would wake the girls up at 5 in the morning to help me pack the Everything Bundles before heading to school. My husband would drop the packages off in the Post Office lobby before catching the train to work. I would spend my lunch hour packing orders in my car and racing to the post office across town to mail them out in time and get back to work each day. 

Every inch of our tiny townhouse was covered with boxes, mailing supplies and inventory. When the pandemic happened, we weren’t ready for the influx of orders and new Sunflowers that came our way. At one point we had 4 storage units, in addition to our home where we ran our business. We were so tired and confused at this point, that it never dawned on us that we finally had enough money to move into a bigger home, but who moves during a pandemic? Well that’s exactly what we did and Sunny In Denbigh finally had a home in our new basement. We were so happy and thought we were going to roll on into glory right here from the basement. Well God had other plans for us, as 3 months after relocating into the basement it started looking too small, a lot like our townhouse did. We thought, “this aint gon’ work?” We needed more space and we needed a team to help us scale.

In April of 2022, we moved into our now warehouse space, hired a solid team and I was no longer everything in our business. We have a team of incredible people working with us who share our vision and desire to be the best in our industry. 

We have had good times and bad times! We won big and lost hard. The learning curve was steep for a former 9-5’er, with no practical business experience. For the first few years I stood in my own way. I struggled with imposter syndrome and self doubt. But I studied, read books, watched interviews, got mentors, and became obsessed with becoming the best version of myself. 

If you’re still reading this, be inspired! Know that I am just like you or you might even be a little sharper at your starting point. I have a diagnosed speech impediment, yet I have graced large stages to speak. I am dyslexic, yet I was a college professor for 17 years. I grew up without a father in my life, yet I married a man who is the best father to my kids. I had no prior business experience outside of a textbook, yet I am 5 years into running a thriving beauty brand. I had no money to start a business, yet I borrowed money from mom and started the business. I grew up poor, yet I am currently living my best life. 

All this to say, you have what you need to start and grow that thing, whatever it might be in your life. Go for it..full force, everyday, no excuses, give it everything you have and I promise you will be glad you did! The way my life has changed in 5 years..only God!

Arriving at the moment is really everything to me. When thinking about how to fully honor how far we have come as a business and as a way to pay homage to our early days, I think it’s only right that we reintroduce the OG Bundle that started it all…our Everything Hair Bundle 2.0! This bundle will be released for a limited time to celebrate our 5 year anniversary in business. If you’re a day one Sunflower then you know how nostalgic this is for us.
